Physical Education
Health and Physical Education at Aitken Hill Primary School provides students with knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to achieve a degree of autonomy in developing and maintaining their physical, mental, social and emotional health. This domain focuses on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity in the lives of individuals and groups in our society.
At AHPS, Physical Education primarily focuses on the Fundamental Movement Sequences (running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, kicking, punting, striking balls with a bat and racquet and dribbling a ball) from introduction through to mastery for each sequence. We do this through a range of targeted drills, individual and team challenges and modified games that utilise the FMS. As the students develop their skills towards mastery, we focus on developing the FMS in sport specific games and developing an understanding the role strategy plays in organised sports. Years 4-6 students have many opportunities to represent Aitken Hill Primary at an inter-school level in a wide range of individual and team sports.
Throughout the year students across all year levels will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clinics run by outside sporting groups and agencies.
Performing Arts
The Arts at Aitken Hill Primary School enable students to develop their creative and expressive capacities by learning about the different practices, disciplines and traditions that have shaped the expression of culture locally, nationally and globally. Students are both artist and audience in the Arts. They make and respond and learn to appreciate the specific ways this occurs in different disciplines.
Children will be given the opportunity to experience a broad but comprehensive program in the Performing Arts, which includes Music, Dance and Drama. All students will get to be performers and audience in each of the three disciplines to foster enjoyment, confidence, empathy and develop positive attitudes and understandings of the Performing Arts.

STEM at Aitken Hill Primary School is a space where collaboration, innovation and creativity is explicitly taught through a variety of well-developed, problem-based inquiry models across Foundation to Year 6. It is a space where learner engagement is at its peak and learning is infused by four main Victorian Curriculum areas, including Digital Technologies, Design Technologies, Science and Critical and Creative Thinking capabilities.
Students work as self-directed, active investigators and problem-solvers in small collaborative groups. Teachers adopt the role as facilitators of learning, guiding the learning process and promoting an environment of inquiry. Visual Arts
Visual Arts at Aitken Hill Primary School involves students making and responding to artworks, drawing on the world as a source of ideas. Students engage with and develop knowledge of visual arts, skills, techniques and processes, and use materials as they explore a range of forms, styles and contexts.
Through Visual Arts, students learn to reflect critically on their own experiences and responses to the work of artists, craftspeople and designers and to develop their own arts’ knowledge. They learn, with growing sophistication, to express and communicate experiences through and about visual arts.
